More Posturing in Biloxi
The Sun Herald has reported that Hayes Bolton’s plans for a fence were rejected, again, by the Biloxi Architectural and Historical Review Commission this past week. The ARC said that Bolton’s plans were not in keeping with the historical nature of the Biloxi lighthouse. The contentious nature of this relationship between the city and the owner of oceanfront property across from the light is beginning to border on the ridiculous. Negotiations are based on give and take, meeting each other halfway, until a satisfactory agreement is reached. This does not seem to be the case here.

Furniture Needed For Restoration
The Lorain (Ohio) Lighthouse may be missing its Fresnel Lens, but the Port of Lorain Foundation is nonetheless working to redo the house in period furniture. Their dilemma right now, though, is what era? According to a story in the Morning Journal, the choice is between the 1920s, from when the lighthouse was first built (1917), or the 1950s, from which they have photos. Two committees are working on collecting donated furniture in good condition to help with the cost. Items like beds, stoves, desks, kitchen tables are needed.

Russia and the Ukraine Haggle Over Lighthouses
A Ukrainian Court recently ruled that Russia must give back the one hundred plus lighthouses along the Crimean coast of the Black Sea. Ukrainian police attempting to seize one of the lighthouses in the Black Sea after the ruling by their courts were stopped from entering by a representative of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. The Black Sea Fleet says the decision to hand the lighthouse over can only be made at governmental level. This is the latest action in the dispute over who owns or can operate the lighthouses.

Congressman Arranges Conference
In the latest news from Old Saybrook, CT, comes the information that First Selectman Michael Pace has arranged a meeting with the US Coast Guard and the General Services Administration to tell them to “keep the lighthouse, we don’t want it.” Congressman Joe Courtney has arranged the January 30 meeting in Old Saybrook to allow Pace to voice his concerns directly to the powers that be in charge of excessing the lighthouse. Of course, we still don’t know exactly which lighthouse is being excessed. Both are pictured in the photo to the left. Is it the one at the end of the breakwater, which is featured on the state license plate? Or maybe it’s the Lynde Point Lighthouse. Either way, this has been a fiasco from the beginning.

Eminent Domain Bid Fails To Pass
The Biloxi City Council, by a three to three tie vote, failed to pass an eminent domain takeover for the Bolton property this past week. The Council, which has already acquired two hurricane damaged properties, wants the Hayes Bolton beachfront land, which they refer to as a junkyard, for a planned lighthouse park. One councilmember was absent, so the vote might have gone either way.
