Eastbourne Council Raised Prices For Road
All anyone has ever wanted was for Belle Tout Lighthouse, Sussex, UK, to be a bed and breakfast. When the Belle Tout trust was formed, that was their plan. When the lighthouse was snatched from under them by a private buyer, those were the ultimate plans by the new owner. But now, the Eastbourne Town Council has thrown a bit of a snag in the work. Original Style of Beacon Will Be Recreated
Emmet County, Michigan, is fast becoming number one in lighthouse activism. No sooner have they, along with the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association, finished with the purchase, lantern room rebuild and relighting of McGulpin Point Lighthouse, than they have partnered once again with GLLKA to undertake the replacement of the Petoskey Pier Lighthouse. Why replace, when there’s already a perfectly functional light already there? Well, it’s not the original, which was swept off the pier during a Christmas Eve storm in 1924, probably similar to the one pictured at left. And Emmet County residents Carolyn and Gordon Bourland would like to see the original, historically accurate light instead.

Pointe d’Aiguillon Lighthouse Goes On the Market
Be still my heart. This is a once in a lifetime chance to purchase the property containing the Pointe d’Aiguillon lighthouse on the north bank of the Loire estuary on the east side of Saint-Marc-sur Mer, about 8 km southwest of Saint-Nazaire, France. This marvelously restored keeper’s home has five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a view to die for. That view is of course the active lighthouse, which comes with the property. And the price? A mere €780,000. Okay, so that’s almost $1.1 million US dollars.

The Lighthouse - Repainting
Originally uploaded by Eye-rickIt had to happen. In a story at the Chronicle Herald, business owners tell of the tourists visiting the famous lighthouse complaining that the work has ruined their photos. And some business owners think not enough is being done in the area, citing traffic concerns. Jo Beale, a resident of Peggys Cove, would like to see the street shut off to vehicles. “People who come can’t experience the tranquillity of Peggys Cove,” she said.

Group Claims Adding Rocks Will Harm Environment
After months of planning, and getting approval and estimated for the addition of rocks at Montauk Point Lighthouse, including having to transfer ownership to the town of East Hampton to get the funding, a group of surfers has come forward to protest the addition of the rocks to the existing revetment at the point. The Eastern Long Island Surfriders claimed at a July 7 meeting that the better thing to do is move the lighthouse away from the cliff edge, citing such lighthouses as Sankaty, Cape Hatteras and others as examples.

Wisconsin Lighthouse To Get New Paint
Although having received a new and shiny coat of paint in the fall of 2007, Wind Point Lighthouse (WI) is getting another one this year. That’s because the paint job failed from the last time. According to a story in the Journal Times, this new paint job will covered under a warranty from Masonry Restoration, Inc. Visitors to this iconic lighthouse will have to hold off on taking the scenic pictures like the one by James Jordan at the left, at least for a little while.
