Signs 15 Year Lease With Coast Guard
Ending a ten year battle over the property, the Chewonki Foundation of Wiscasset, Maine, has signed the lease for Squirrel Point Lighthouse, on the Kennebec River near Arrowsic, Maine. This is great news for the Citizens For Squirrel Point, who watched this charming lighthouse given to a so-called non-profit group ten years ago, under the Maine Lights program, and then gasped in disgust as Michael Trenholm, Yarmouth, Me, the head of this group calling itself Squirrel Point Associates tried to sell the property to private developers.

I found a great little (11 1/2 minutes) flash show about a lighthouse keeper, produced by Lerro Productions. I thought you might enjoy seeing it (Subscribers: you’ll have to visit Lighthouse News to watch). It includes some lovely photography, historical photos, and best of all, an interview with Harry E. Spencer, Jr., a lightkeeper from the US Lighthouse Service. Enjoy.

Katrina Damaged Fresnel Getting A Rehab
Besides demolishing the Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum in Biloxi, MS, Hurricane Katrina took one final blow at the Ship Island Lighthouse Fresnel lens. When searching through the rubble, museum members found the Fourth Order Fresnel lens had been smashed by a wall. The beautiful, beehive style lens was in pieces underneath. But St. Augustine Lighthouse Conservators Joe (It’s Like Watching Paint Dry) Cocking and Nick (Never Say Die) Johnston have undertaken the Humpty-Dumpty like task of putting the pieces back together.

Another Vandalism At a Lighthouse
And from another part of the world comes news of a break in with vandalism to an iconic lighthouse. This one comes from South Africa. The Donkin Reserve Lighthouse, Port Elizabeth, had two of its windows smashed and burglar bars bent as thieves broke in and stole a computer. Apparently they had enough time to break one window, bend the bars, and discovered they couldn’t easily get in due to boxes piled up inside. So they then went to a second window where they succeeded in their illegal entry.

Delimara Just Needs Bathrooms
The Delimara Lighthouse in Malta is nearing completion of the renovations started in 2006. All that’s left to do are the bathrooms. Oh, and the lantern mechanism. But it’s been an amazing accomplishment so far. The Malta Maritime Authority and Din L-Art Helwa (National Trust of Malta) have repaired the damage to the walls, the timber apertures, the roof and the lantern tower, including fresh paint. The photo below was taken before the work began. You can see how badly it looked.
