Misinformation In Sanibel Story
A story appeared in the Fort Meyers Florida Weekly recently, that seems to imply the Sanibel lighthouse beacon is on a fast track to being extinguished. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Comments Bring Problem To Light
A couple of interesting comments were made on a recent article about the Flag series of stamps issued by the Canadian Post Office in late December. It was mentioned that either the lighthouse had been moved to Australia, or that (most likely) the been reversed to keep the flag in the same position as the rest of the series.

Sadly, the Belle Toute Trust will not be seeking to buy the lighthouse in Sussex at this time. Like so many of our lighthouse preservation groups, the support is there, but only verbally. Not monetarily. A small donation of only one pound from enough people would have given them enough to go ahead, but alas, it wasn’t going to happen. Below is the complete press release from Rob Wassell. For those readers in the UK, Mr. Wassell will be giving a live interview on the South Counties Radio Sussex Breakfast Show with Neil Pringle at approximately 07:40 on Wednesday 9 January.

Board Can’t Do Anything
The Daily Freeman has released an updated story on the lawsuit filed by Saugerties police officer Sydney Mills adn his wife Amy. Fifty people attended the Village Board meeting on Monday, January 7, but were told by the Board and Mayor that they can’t really do anything, as it’s a civil matter, not a village board matter. Calls for firing the officer were met with a refusal by mayor Robert Yerick, who said the Board is limited in what they can do, since the officer has the right to sue, but they can share information, even though they can’t take sides.

New Hope For the Trust?
Belle Toute Lighthouse in Suffolk, UK, is back on the market after the latest purchase offer fell through. And this time at a greatly reduced price. It originally went on the market for £850,000 last September, and the Belle Toute Trust was created to buy it and turn it into a bed and breakfast. Unfortunately, a private party put in an offer, which was topped by a second offer from another person. And the Trust lost its opportunity. Now the owners are offering it again, but this time for only £595,000. Translated to US dollars, that’s a drop from $1,677,747 (today’s rate) to a mere $1,174,423.

Injured On Duty
A Saugerties police officer, Sydney Mills and his wife Amy, has sued the Lighthouse Conservancy for injuries he received while responding to a “boater in distress” call in the village. Although he was paid Worker’s Compensation, he filed suit in August for the injuries, claiming the Conservancy failed to properly maintain the trail and failed to warn users of “the dangerous and defective condition of the nature trail.” His wife is also a party to the lawsuit, claiming the incident has deprived her of the support provided by her husband.
