Saybrook Selectman: Keep the Lighthouse »

Congressman Arranges Conference

A view of the two Saybrook Lighthouses - Photo by abphoto48 on FlickrIn the latest news from Old Saybrook, CT, comes the information that First Selectman Michael Pace has arranged a meeting with the US Coast Guard and the General Services Administration to tell them to “keep the lighthouse, we don’t want it.” Congressman Joe Courtney has arranged the January 30 meeting in Old Saybrook to allow Pace to voice his concerns directly to the powers that be in charge of excessing the lighthouse. Of course, we still don’t know exactly which lighthouse is being excessed. Both are pictured in the photo to the left. Is it the one at the end of the breakwater, which is featured on the state license plate? Or maybe it’s the Lynde Point Lighthouse. Either way, this has been a fiasco from the beginning.

Eminent Domain Bid Fails To Pass

Biloxi Lighthouse - Creative Commons photo by charltonlido on FlickrThe Biloxi City Council, by a three to three tie vote, failed to pass an eminent domain takeover for the Bolton property this past week. The Council, which has already acquired two hurricane damaged properties, wants the Hayes Bolton beachfront land, which they refer to as a junkyard, for a planned lighthouse park. One councilmember was absent, so the vote might have gone either way.

Pigeon Point Lighthouse To Be Repaired »

Fundraising Underway

Pigeon Point Lighthouse - Creative Commons photo by MumbleyJoe on FlickrA little over six years ago, two huge chunks of Pigeon Point (near Pescadero, CA) Lighthouse’s bricks and ironwork fell to the ground. Fearing for visitors’ safety, the California State Parks closed the tower to everyone, although the grounds remain open. Since that time, tourists wanting to view this breathtaking 115 foot tall lighthouse have been disappointed. But no longer. A major fundraising campaign is about to begin, with a goal of $6 million to be raised - $5 million for repair work and $1 million as an endowment for maintenance.

Air Force Closes Lighthouse Grounds

Cape Canaveral Lighthouse - Creative Commons photo by kreuzader on FlickrApparently after completing recent renovations on the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse, one area was overlooked…the grounds, which the US Air Force says is contaminated with lead, according to a story on WESH. Now no one is allowed on the grounds of the lighthouse, located between launch pads for space shuttles. The US Air Force acquired the light in 2000, and in 2002 the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation was formed. A complete restoration was finished in 2006. Photos of the work can be seen on the Foundation’s website.
