What I write on here is not to be taken as counsel, or endorsement of any activity that may cause harm to you, your significant other, your first born child or your computer. In other words, if you are injured because you read of a group rappelling down a lighthouse and decided to try it, it is not my fault and I am not responsible for any injuries or death that may occur.

What This Site Is Not

Lighthouse News is not a job board for lighthouse keeper positions, and only publishes openings (mostly volunteer) as a service to other preservationists. There are no actual lighthouse jobs available, so contacting me on how to be a lighthouse keeper will only get you an email saying, sorry, no dice. All lighthouses in the United States are automated, as are most around the world. At best, you can become a part-time caretaker, usually as a volunteer, at which you often have to pay, or you can stay at one of the many privately owned or maintained lighthouse beds and breakfast around the world. At a cost to yourself, of course.

Although this site lists the occasional lighthouse for sale, Lighthouse News is not a real estate broker and has no interest, monetary compensation or any connection to these sales. The information is provided as a service to those wanting to own a lighthouse.

Lighthouse News is dedicated to bringing you news and features of interest to Lighthouse lovers worldwide. The site makes heavy use of news articles found online. However, some sites may not archive stories, and they will disappear from the internet after some time. My apologies if the link you follow is no longer in existence, but I have no control over it. Lighthouse News attempts to publish the news so you get the complete picture irregardless of the original story being available.

On occasion, website domains change hands, become unavailable, expire or link to inappropriate sites. While all effort is made to verify these things periodically, mistakes happen, and Lighthouse News is in no way responsible for offsite content. Lighthouse News strives to remain family friendly and safe for all, but cannot guarantee that for offsite links.

Every effort is made to use oly those images and photos licensed under the Creative Commons License, or in the Public Domain, but on occasion all rights are reserved by their owners. Permission is always sought if possible, but sometimes fails in that case. All images and photos are properly credited, but if you feel it is being used improperly, please notify Lighthouse News so the image can be taken down immediately.

Lighthouse News does not allow hotlinking to images found on the site, as most are the property of others. If you like an image, please visit the original owner’s link (found at the bottom of every article) and ask permission (if required) from them. Lighthouse News cannot grant that permission.

Some photographs may offend users of this site, particularly those of lighthouses that are neglected, damaged and falling apart. By your use of this site, and viewing of these photographs, you agree to hold Lighthouse News, Sue Clark, her heirs and pets free from any indemnity, liability or harm caused by said viewing, including but not limited to damage to eyeballs caused by vigorous scrubbing after seeing the horrors that have been done to our historic beacons.

Use of Site Content

All articles are copyright © (insert date here) by Lighthouse News. Lighthouse News allows fair use of the articles, but they may not be republished in their entirety anywhere on the web. Scrapers, spammers, spamblogs and plagiarists are the scum of the earth, and will be served with a DMCA takedown notice when you are found. To everyone else, if you are not reading Lighthouse News on the site, in your email, an RSS reader, or on certain legitimate news sites, it is requested you contact me immediately so I can determine if they are in violation.

Occasionally, Lighthouse News receives requests to reprint articles in offline publications such as newsletters. Please feel free to contact me, as I usually grant permission. Use of any images in the articles printed in newsletters must also contain credits to the photographers. And I do like to receive a copy, either through email or postal mail.

Advertising

Due to the high cost of maintaining this site, Lighthouse News does accept advertising. In order to keep it relevant to the readership, all advertisers are carefully screened, and only those of interest to visitors to this are accepted. You will not see any generic ads on these pages. Please visit these sponsors and purchase from them, as they are what keeps this site going.

In the future, it may be possible that a post will be sponsored (for payment), but it will always be clearly stated at the end of the article that it is a sponsored (paid for) advertisement. In no way will Lighthouse News mislead anyone with advertisements.

If the site makes any profit, a portion of the money is donated to different lighthouse organizations. Currently, the ones that will be receiving any money are:

Great Lakes Light Keepers Association

International Visitors

Lighthouse News provides a translation utility to international visitors. However, as the translation is handled by Google, Lighthouse News assumes no responsibility whatsoever for the results, interpretation of content, grammatical errors or understanding of the result. It is provided solely for convenience. Any issues with the translation, please contact Google.

As a corollary, Lighthouse News is not responsible for any defamatory statements bound to government, religious, or other laws from the reader’s country of origin. Use of this site is at your own risk.

Privacy

This site makes use of cookies, particularly if you leave a comment. It will remember your name, email and website information on your next visit. However, your email will never ever be publicly seen on this site, and in no way does Lighthouse News use, sell, abuse, fold, staple or mutilate your email address. You can be assured you will never receive any spam from this site. Guaranteed.

Email Newsletter is handled by an outside service known as Feedburner, and requires a double opt-in. You have to list a valid email, confirm that you want the email delivery through a clickable link in the confirmation e-mail, and if you use a spam blocker, you will not be able to receive the confirmation email. Please disable it before signing up and re-enable it afterwards. Some internet service providers and countries may also block Feedburner, so sign up may be unsuccessful. I am in no way responsible for the actions of governments or internet service providers, so please be aware you might not be able to subscribe in that situation. Feedburner also does not send any spam. You will receive the newsletter and nothing else from them. I promise. Nor from me.

Site Tracking is also in use, through Google Analytics and HiStats. Neither collects any personally identifiable information about you, but rather the use of your site. This is used by me to keep track of “how I’m doing,” and to make your visit here more enjoyable. Such things as time on site, pages viewed, your general geographic location, how you found this site, and similar data is collected.

Comment Policy

Lighthouse News leaves commenting options open for a period of time on all articles, so feel free to post your opinions of any articles. However, a few rules must be set down, just to make it legal.

If you’re using the comment to sell something (also known as spamming), or to encourage someone to visit your site for the purpose of selling medications, insurances, etc., your comment will be removed immediately and your IP address will be banned.
If you’re leaving a comment in order to sell a lighthouse related product, your comment will be removed and you will be contacted with a current list of advertising rates. I do not provide free advertising to anyone except lighthouse non-profit groups.
Please be polite, no name calling, rudeness, personal attacks and so on. If you’re unsure on whether your comment qualifies as falling under these limitations, just remember the Golden Rule. Discussions are welcome, but keep it nice.
