Lighthouses As Spy Detectors?
Radars are to be installed on nine lighthouses on the east and west coasts of India, according to a news note at New India Press. The Director-General of Lighthouses, M.M.S. Suman, indicated the radars would help to solve traffic problems from increased cargo vessels at the ports.

Why Is It Red For Stop?
I came across a site the other day that had an intriguing title: Why Can’t I Cook My Sister? It’s actually from a book, Father Knows Less Or: “Can I Cook My Sister?”: One Dad’s Quest to Answer His Son’s Most Baffling Questions written by Wendell Jamieson, and was excerpted on the Sydney Morning Herald Parenting pages. It’s a delightful book about a father who decided to get the authoritative answers to all the questions his (and other) children asked. So, what does this have to do with lighthouses? Free Lake Michigan Lighthouse Map
It’s not too early to start planning your lighthouse trips for the summer. And to make it easy for you to visit the Lake Michigan lighthouses, the West Michigan Tourist Association is offering a free Lake Michigan Circle Tour and Lighthouse Map.
You can order one sent to you via postal mail on their website, or if you don’t want to wait you can input your email address and get a link to download a PDF file of the complete map. However, it’s 38mb in size and 51 pages. If you’re on dialup, go for the snail mail. I’m on high speed cable and it still choked. So here is a direct link…you can right click on it and save it to your computer.
Ancient Lighthouse Found
Turkish archaeologists digging at the ancient Roman port of Patara, near Kas, Antalya, Turkey, have uncovered an almost 2,000 year old lighthouse. With this discovery, the twelve meter tall lighthouse, thought to be built during the years of Emperor Nero’s reign (54-68 A.D.), can claim to be the oldest lighthouse in existence. The lighthouse at Alexandria, although older, no longer exists.
Professor Havva Iskan Isik, head of the excavation team, said she thought there may be a second lighthouse buried in the dirt at the opposite side of the port. The other site will be excavated at a future time.
A website with photos is available that also tells a story of the skeletal remains found of the lightkeeper. It speculates he was killed during a tsunami.
World's Tallest Lighthouse
So what do you do with 40 acres in a small Maine town, that used to house a US Navy Communications Center that was closed by the government? Well, you can chop it up and sell it to developers (although the town of Corea isn’t exactly booming), or you can do what a Maine Forest Ranger has done, and come up with your own whimsical concept, make a poster showing it and donate it to the local town.Continued...
