Waves crashing against the shore are nothing unusual for the Indian resorts of Puri and Gopalpur, in Orissa, India, but “the sea has been behaving in an unnatural manner with high waves lashing against the coast and damaging structures. It seems the sea is inching inside,” said Jagannath Bastia, an environmental activist, according to a story in the Zee News. The photo of the lighthouse was taken on July 25, 2007, just days before the waves washed away nearly 547 yards of a newly-constructed road on the outskirts of Puri, several walls of hotels and the lighthouse.

Almost two weeks ago, I posted a little blurb about Point Abino Lighthouse leading the pack in the “race” for one of the Seven Wonders of Fort Erie, Ontario, CA. The Niagara Falls Review is running a little competition, for nominating and voting for those seven wonders, along with a similar competition for Niagara Falls. Since that intrigued me. I decided to learn a bit more about Point Abino Lighthouse.

After taking a direct hit from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, along with a November 2006 storm that virtually finished the damage, plans for stabilizing the New Canal lighthouse have gone by the wayside after the estimates on cost came in much higher than anticipated. Estimations of the cost to shore up the structure ranged from $100,000 USD to $150,000 USD, but bids came in at $197,000 and $209,000 instead. One estimate for the entire restoration project calls for a budget of $2.7 million. Workers would need about $500,000 of that just to reconstruct the lighthouse, according to the story.
