A recent Lighthouse News story highlighted Environment and Heritage Minister Peter Garrett’s opposition to development on Nobbys Hill Lighthouse. Although Garrett says he is not completely against developing the site to make it more tourist friendly, he did again reject plans for accomodations and a restaurant on the property, according to a story on ABC Newcastle, Garrett on May 19 made the decision after examining 450 submissions, most against any development.

An announcement was made today (May 9, 2008), that President Bush has signed the act designating Jupiter Inlet as an Outstanding Natural Area. Officials gathered at the lighthouse to celebrate Jupiter becoming the second in the nation lighthouse with this honor. Yaquina Head in Oregon is the only other lighthouse so named. Lighthouse News is still awaiting word on Piedras Blancas’ designation.

Clare Island Lighthouse, on the market since 2006, apparently has had no interest with a price tag of 2.1 million Euros ($3,303,912 USD). The company listing it has cut the asking price down to 500,000 Euros, or only $786,645.90 USD. Want to make an offer on it at that price?

An A-MAZE-ing Lighthouse
Now this is a work of art. The recently rebuilt Blackistone Lighthouse on St. Clement’s Island, Maryland, has been turned into a truly a-maze-ing creation, in which you can get lost. Bowles Farms, of Clement, MD has carved its likeness into 15 acres of cornfields for the month of October. It guarantees you will spend hours in a lighthouse.

Lighthouse Fun Run For Breast Cancer
If you’re in New South Wales, Australia, on Sunday, October 19, get out your running shoes for the very scenic Run For Breast Cancer. The Coordinator for the event wants to see at least five runners or walkers for each breast cancer patient on the North Coast. That translates to 1000 or so participants.

Ooops. Looks like building a lighthouse without proper permits is wrong. The Washington Post has an article about a gentleman who owns an island in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, who has had a suit filed against him by the State of Maryland.Continued...
Failing Of The Light

Faux Lighthouse Shines Bright Again
A lighthouse built in the center of a traffic circle in downtown Brigantine, NJ, has been restored and lit. Thanks to the efforts (and muscle) of city councilman Ralph Aversa, the faux lighthouse, once used as the police station and then as a museum, sports a new coat of paint (white and Lighthouse Red) and a revolving light magnified with a mirror.Continued...
Lighthouse Golf Course
Now here is a factoid I didn’t know. On Fair Isle, a birdwatcher’s paradise 25 miles south of Shetland Island, Scotland, sits two lighthouses at opposite ends of the island. To while away the hours in the 1960s, the lighthouse keepers built a golf course (this is Scotland, birthplace of the game) near the South Lighthouse.Continued...
