After its successful fundraising effort last August, Macmillan Cancer Support will once again offer the sport of abseiling (rappelling) down the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse. The charity raised more than £18,000 last year ($35,500 USD) and hopes to exceed that this year.

Participants should raise at least £100 in sponsorship money. Camping will be available at the site, and a live band will be performing at a barn dance for participants. For more information on how to take part contact Fiona Hawthorne, fundraising manager for Highlands and Moray: e-mail fhawthorne@macmillan.org.uk or contact Macmillan’s north of Scotland office: e-mail northscotland@macmillan.org.uk

As an aside, let me say as a docent at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, we had a number of people make it to the top, but then were afraid to come back down. Even though Pemaquid’s tower is only 39 feet tall, this would have been an ideal way to have them come down when they balked. Actually, we did offer them a bungee cord if they had problems (it usually helped, although no one took us up on the offer. Just the threat of it helped them get back down :)).

And on occasion my husband (who was upstairs in the lantern room) would ask visitors if they’d given me their name so the Bristol First Responders would know who to call for next of kin notifications if they stayed up there. Sometimes humor goes a long way. Get them chuckling and back down they go. Sometimes backwards, sometimes on their behinds, but we never had to call the fire department for a rescue.

Lighthouse News Turns One Year Old

Lighthouse News turns one year old on June 20. This site started when I would look online for news about our beloved beacons, and couldn’t find one single site that had a synopsis of stories. So, I decided to start one. This site has come a long way since its first two posts on June 20, 2007 (Park Service Seeks Volunteers and Sandy Neck Lighthouse Shines). There are now, as of this date, 305 posts spread over 46 pages. I have changed the looks several times, and have moved from shared hosting to a virtual private server. I have gained many subscribers and have had thousands of visitors. I have corresponded with some of you, and hope to speak with even more of you. So in honor of this first birthday, and to thank everyone for making this site successful, I want to give away some birthday gifts.

The Mystery Woman Of Cuckmere Haven

What is it about lighthouses that evoke romance? Is it the light guiding the way to those who are lost? Perhaps it’s the perseverance, the stability that brings about such thoughts? Or maybe it’s just their beauty. Whatever it is, countless marriages are performed at lighthouses every year. Overnight stays or vacations at lighthouses count among the most popular for couples seeking to spend time together. But what about a romance that hasn’t happened, but might?

A chance encounter at Cuckmere Haven, within sight of Beachy Head and Belle Toute Lighthouses, has left Rob Wassell, Chairman of the Belle Toute Preservation Society, wondering if a shared fondness for lighthouses will lead to perhaps more.

Last week at Cuckmere Haven I encountered a woman who made a great impression on me, even though I know nothing about her. It’s one of those romantic little situations where two people encounter each other, hardly say anything and then go their separate ways and never see each other again. However, I want to do all I can to try to see her again.

Will she be free and single or will she have a husband and seven children? Who knows…. I’ll only find out if she knows that I am looking for her and if she gets in touch.

It may seem daft and romantic although it’s such a bizarre situation it is very important to me and I wish to do all I can to find this mystery woman.

Who Is She? Do You Know?

To this end, Rob has created a website just for this quest, complete with a special email address to get in touch with him if she sees it, or if someone can identify her. There is a photo at the site, so maybe someone knows who she is. It’s been garnering some attention in the press, including newspapers, radio and television, and the more that people know he’s looking, the better the chance of finding her.

From the site, he has a special message to her:

I do realise that it must be quite daunting to hear of my search for you although I definitely felt ’something’ that I have never felt before when I saw you that day. The only way I can best describe it is that I ‘melted’ when you smiled at me and I was completely lost for words.

It is a rare thing to be able to have a second chance at an opportunity which passed you by. I don’t want to regret for the rest of my life that I didn’t do all that I could to try to find you, hence the effort that I am going to.

I can reassure you that I haven’t done anything like this before and my involvement with the Belle Toute Lighthouse Preservation Trust should confirm that I am a sensible and professional chap.

Irrespective of the press interest in this story and whatever your circumstance or opinion I give you my word to respect any wish that you may have. In relation to the media, if desired you can remain anonymous.

You could be married with seven children, you could be perfectly happy as you are, we might not even get on if we do get to meet again - I just hope you get in touch so that I can find out.

Best wishes,

Rob

The encounter happened 21 May. If you know who she is, or if you are perchance reading this and recognize yourself, please get in touch with Rob at imashe@myterywoman.co.uk. And let Lighthouse News know also. A little love in this world is what we could all use.

How Come I Never Had Such a Fun Project In School?

Combining Social Studies, Science and Language Arts, students at Palms Elementary School in Fair Haven, Michigan, the fourth grade taught by Patti Adams got to do a really neat project for their Michigan Studies curriculum. They built lighthouses. Well, not full size ones, but little working models that will be on display beginning May 30 at the “Michigan Lighthouse Museum” in their classroom. And they will be viewed in the dark, so the lights can shine just like a real one.

Michigan requires (state mandated) a section on Michigan History, and Adams thought this would be an excellent and fun way to combine all the units into one. How come I never had something like that when I was in school? We had Michigan History Week, and it was mostly facts and figures. From the story:

Doing research regarding a lighthouse was a Social Studies project, while in language arts, the children had to write a paper that followed a rubric, answering questions about the light’s history, city and the Great Lake on which it is located, construction and features of the lighthouse, as well as give an oral presentation of their work. Requiring the fourth-graders to build a circuit system that results in a working light in the tower covers the science lessons.

And using the Distance Learning Lab, the students got to talk with Bob Hanford, of the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse in Port Huron.

Kudos to Ms. Adams for taking a normally dry subject and turning it into a fun, family project, all the while highlighting the Great Lakes lighthouses. Wish I could be there to see these. Great work, kids.
Copyright © 2008 Lighthouse News.
