Now this is a work of art. The recently rebuilt Blackistone Lighthouse on St. Clement’s Island, Maryland, has been turned into a truly a-maze-ing creation, in which you can get lost. Bowles Farms, of Clement, MD has carved its likeness into 15 acres of cornfields for the month of October. It guarantees you will spend hours in a lighthouse.

From their website (www.bowlesfarms.com/) is this description:

This years 15 acres of corn is cut into a maze that from the sky depicts the Blackistone Lighthouse. Carved through living 10 foot cornstalks, over 3.5 miles of twisting and turning trails await to challenge and surprise you. This year’s maze will present the most challenging 3-D experience ever! Come see why getting lost means having fun.

Okay, I couldn’t resist, so here is a small image of the maze they have posted on their site. You’ll need to visit their page to see it in full, though. Click the image to visit the site. Or use link above.

If you’re in New South Wales, Australia, on Sunday, October 19, get out your running shoes for the very scenic Run For Breast Cancer. The Coordinator for the event wants to see at least five runners or walkers for each breast cancer patient on the North Coast. That translates to 1000 or so participants.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month around the world, and a lot of sponsored walks, runs, and other events are taking place around the globe to raise funds to beat this killer disease. Carolyn Forbes, the coordinator, said about this second run, “The course is so unique. How wonderful to run or walk along Main Beach at Byron Bay and up to the fabulous lighthouse and back again, all for breast cancer. “The route takes you to the lighthouse then back along the beach and people can run or walk,” she said. “We have got some really generous sponsors and there are going to be some great prizes.” Full story is at Byron Shire News.

On an unrelated note, Yahoo.Com will be donating €1, up to a total of €30,000, for every pink photograph uploaded to its special Flickr group this month. If you’d like to help participate, create an account at Flickr, join the Pink2008 Group, and upload your pink photos, up to five per day.

And if the web looks a little pink this month, it’s to show support for breast cancer awareness and research.

Ooops. Looks like building a lighthouse without proper permits is wrong. The Washington Post has an article about a gentleman who owns an island in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, who has had a suit filed against him by the State of Maryland.

It appears he built his two story house, which included an attached lighthouse, in violation of the state’s new environmental laws protecting sensitive land. All the land on which he built is in a federally protected area.

The suit seeks to have all the structures built without permits torn down, and the two acre island returned to its pristine state, including restoration of trees and grasses that filter the water runoff. The island is in theMagothy River.

Unfortunately, no pictures are available for the offending lighthouse, but you can read the story at the Washington Post.
Copyright © 2008 Lighthouse News

But it never really got off the drawing board. Now the museum is at the brink of vanishing from the Staten island scene for good.

Those are the words from the article posted at Staten Island Live. It’s a shame, because if it had gone to Mackinaw City, Michigan, in the first place, the museum would have been up and running within months. Unfortunately, according to Terry Pepper, the State Dock, which was the planned site of the museum, is no longer available.

Perhaps the Great Lakes Light Keepers Association can find a new site and take up where New York dropped the ball. Or rather, gave in to private developers. It’s sad. In the meantime, we do have the Maine Lighthouse Museum.
Copyright © 2008 Lighthouse News

Thanks to the efforts (and muscle) of city councilman Ralph Aversa, the faux lighthouse, once used as the police station and then as a museum, sports a new coat of paint (white and Lighthouse Red) and a revolving light magnified with a mirror.

Thanks to leaks (even fake lighthouses face this issue) through rotted windows, most of the floors had holes, including the subflooring. Aversa rounded up volunteers and donors, who put new floors and windows into place, and created the light at the top. The tower was never used as an Aid to Navigation, so the homebuilt motor that turns the light is just for decoration.

What to do with this former cop shop and museum? Well, the city of Brigantine has lots of new ideas for its use. Including using it as a romantic restaurant exclusively for two diners at a time. Perhaps through offering it as a special prize with, according to Aversa’s son, Ralph Jr.
