All Great Lakes Auctions Closed »

So the bidder known as dimlight now owns two Ohio lighthouses. The final amount for the Conneaut Lighthouse was $35,000. Not a bad price in today’s economy. And as far as I could tell, this was probably the best of the three Great Lakes lighthouses that have been up for auction since early September.

And the buyers of the Duluth Harbor lighthouse have revealed themselves to their local newspapers. Steven Sola and Matt Kampf, both of Duluth, acquired the steel tower near the Aerial Lift Bridge on Monday. According to the article at the Duluth News Tribune (free registration required), Sola said:

Lighthouse Coverage Wins Award »

No, not for me, unfortunately. But I’m not a mainstream (yet) publisher of a newspaper. However, one newspaper did win awards for its coverage of the moving of Sankaty Lighthouse (Sankaty, Mass.) this past year. And from no less a prestigious entity as the New England Press Association.

Move Over Nubble, Here Comes Montauk »

First Lighting a Success

With the premier lighting of Montauk Point Lighthouse a success, with thousands of people lining the shores of Long Island to watch, Nubble Lighthouse (Cape Neddick) in York, Maine, has a serious contender for the most decorated lighthouse for the holidays. Maybe it’s an unfair competition, though, since Montauk stands 110 feet tall, compared to the relatively smaller Cape Neddick, which stands a mere 41 feet in height.

Two Great Lakes Lighthouses Sold »

Very Low Sale Price On Both

Sold to the highest bidder! Two of the three lighthouse auctions on the Great Lakes have ended today, with buyers getting quite a steal. Duluth (MN) Harbor South Breakwater Inner Light was the best performer for the government, going for $31,000 to the bidder with the screen name splco. The other light selling today was the Cleveland (OH) Harbor East Breakwater Light. That went for a mere $10,000 to the bidder calling him/herself dimlight. Only Conneaut (OH) Harbor West Breakwater Light remains in play right now, with the addition of a late bidder. Dimlight is also high bidder on this one, with the current offer at $15,000. Still very low for the unusual light, which didn’t have suitable takers when it was offered last year to non-profits.
