Fort Gratiot Update

Although not officially accepted by St. Clair County yet, the city of Port Huron has voted to transfer the lighthouse over to them. And better yet, the council also voted to transfer the $370,000 federal grant it was given, along with the matching funds to the county. The vote, on August 17, was 5-2 in favor.
The city was given the lighthouse after a six year process, but then promptly refused it, citing lack of money as the reason. The Port Huron Museum, which was partnered with the city, then turned to the county after efforts to convince the city council failed. The issue was that the timeline repairs listed in the deed would probably be considered flexible by the National Park Service and General Services Administration, but the city still said nay. Original story from TheVoiceNews. Please note one inaccuracy in the story, though. The lighthouse will not need to be relit since it’s still in active use.
With this vote, the only roadblock now is the county, which has already tentatively shown itself to be amenable to the partnership.
