Does This Look Like a Lighthouse?

The Port of Edmonds Yacht Club, in Washington, has labored long and hard to rebuild their yacht club. The location was chosen, designs were approved, all permits were in place, and ground on this addition to the community was broken late last month. But wait, it’s supposed to be nautical. And look like a lighthouse.
Well, it is, but the lighthouse that the architects wanted to have incorporated into the building, which will be a community function hall, meeting room and more, just doesn’t look like a lighthouse. In fact, in a letter to the editor, one former lighthouse keeper referred to it as looking like a prison guardhouse. Well, you decide from the architect’s rendering below.

So, the architects redrew it, and now need to have it be eight feet taller. All well and good, but it requires a variance from height ordinances in the city. And at least one city council member says no. How this will play out, I ‘m not sure, but the way it’s pictured, it does look a bit like a prison guardhouse. Letters to the editor at the Edmonds Beacon seem to be in favor of raising the height. The Port of Edmonds approved the change.
It would be nice for a yacht club to have more of a nautical look to it, so here’s hoping the Yacht Club gets their variance, and can truly make their faux lighthouse actually look like a lighthouse.

Makes you wonder if the architects have ever even seen a lighthouse.

there are two words that come to mind; Form and Function, if they can’t make up thier mind on one, then the other will have the confused appearance of the building in the picture. If it’s meant to be a lighthouse then make it stand out in its individuality as all lighthouses do, in this respect the tower should have more height to it. I think maybe they should reconsider their thinking and turn the upper front elevation into the bridge of a ship, it will most certainly have the nautical theme about it without so much controversy
