Town To Seek Grants Under New Law
With the good news that the Canadian Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act is moving forward, the town of Fort Erie, Ontario, will apply for Heritage Protection status and seek money for the $460,000 (CDN) rehabilitation under the National Historic Sites of Canada Cost Sharing Program. The town has owned the lighthouse since 2003, but has not put any effort into its preservation until now. The lighthouse, built in 1917, was decommissioned by the Canadian Coast Guard in 1995 and has sat neglected since then. The amount estimated for its repair is from 2003, however.
The town has not yet decided how much money to seek, but any effort to repair this national historic site is welcomed by Charlene Nigh, president of the Point Abino Preservation Society. In a story at the Niagara Falls Review, she’s quoted as saying she was excited by the council’s decision.
Although it’s a small step, Nigh said it’s still good news to hear the town supports preservation of the historic waterfront building. “We’ve been waiting a long time for this … it’s continuing to deteriorate,” Nigh said of the aging landmark.

Its great to see that the Pt Abino lighthouse will be repaired. This National Historic site should be accesible to Canadians. People from other countries should not be able to bar Canadians access to our own historic sites. I am writing to the Heritage minister in regards to this.
