Bones Uncovered At Biloxi Lighthouse

The beleaguered Biloxi (Mississippi) Lighthouse is getting a few more delays on its renovations. Workers have uncovered the skeletal remains of a 300 year old man on the lot next to where the visitor’s center will be built. The Department of Mississippi Archives and History has requested the Lighthouse Park site be checked for archaeological significance.
The city had to dig test holes every five meters across the property, and now must wait for the department and FEMA to issue a finding of no significant impact. By that, it means the construction of the visitor center won’t have an effect on the Moran property’s archaeological dig.
The city has been planning to transform the old gas station across from the lighthouse into a much closer visitor center. The current one is located inconveniently away in the foyer of the Bond Grant House on a different street. Most of the $15 million dollar price tag for the construction will be paid for by the state and federal government.
It’s expected to take up to sixty days for the certificate to be issued. But until then, visitors looking to find out more about the lighthouse’s history will still have to find their way to Howard Avenue.
