First a quick disclaimer: There is no way to compare the saving of a lighthouse to the horrific loss of life and property that occurred in Australia last week due to the brushfires. But this is a site about lighthouse news, so I feel compelled to publish this as a tiny tiny bit of good news for lighthouse lovers.
Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse in Western Australia was saved, not once but twice, from destruction by the brushfires that swept Australia the week of February 7, 2008. Firefighters were called out on February 7, and again on the 10th to deal with fires that threatened the 105 year old lighthouse and nearby residences. Firefighters worked over several days to build containment lines to prevent further damage.
Cape Naturaliste Road at Bunker Bay Road was closed while surrounding walking trails in the area were also closed for several days. Investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing.
