Weekly roundup of feature stories around the ‘net for fun or interesting reading.
Over the past couple weeks or so, there have been quite a few interesting stories online about lighthouses. This is the first of an occasional roundup of these articles. These aren’t necessarily news, just enjoyable reading about our beloved beacons.
- The Lighthouse Devoured by Sand
- Poking its red head up through the shifting sands of Denmark’s weathered coast is the most useless lighthouse in the world. The Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse sits 60 meters above sea level on top of Lønstrup Klint on the edge of the North Sea, and is just about visible to those on land by day, never mind passing ships in the night….
- A real calendar boy
- Cruz Schroeder loves the water. He also loves spending time at Lighthouse Beach in Port Huron.
A picture he crafted of those times has earned him first place in the eighth annual Macomb County Public Works environmental calendar drawing contest. The drawing features Cruz and his parents basking on the beach at the park while a freighter passes under the Blue Water Bridge from the St. Clair River into Lake Huron. But it was the details of the nearby Fort Gratiot Lighthouse and Thomas Edison Museum, along with the wake from the freighter, that impressed the judges. Cruz’s drawing was selected out of a record 1,270 entries….

- Lighthouse association driver doesn’t let weather stop her from taking supplies out on Dungeness Spit
- Not much stops Patty Stone from doing her job.
Following what seems to be a code similar to the U.S. Postal Service’s “neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds,” the Sequim woman steadily takes volunteer lighthouse keepers to their post on Dungeness Spit — the historic New Dungeness Lighthouse. A group of a dozen volunteer drivers perform the difficult task weekly, and out of those, Stone is the only female driver, said Johan Van Nimwegen, vice president of operations for the New Dungeness Light Station Association….

- Pleasant Gardens Elementary kids build lighthouses
- Fourth-graders at Pleasant Gardens Elementary learned about the lighthouses of North Carolina this month – and got a lesson in history, writing, social studies and electrical circuits to boot. After writing a report about their subjects, the kids built working models of their subjects, including custom wiring them to light up. Under Isaacs’ guidance, each child cut a light out of a strand of Christmas tree lights, spliced on extensions to the wires and ran them through their lighthouse. These were secured to the base and connected to AA batteries to illuminate the models. By the time they were finished, the kids could explain simple circuits, not just in theory, but how to construct them and test them.
Enjoy the stories…
