Featuring Fairport Harbor Lighthouse
Although Ohio already has a beautiful lighthouse license plate featuring the graceful Marblehead Lighthouse, the Ohio Senate recently passed legislation to create a new one. Only this one will feature the Fairport Harbor Breakwater Lighthouse. The plate will cost an extra $25 above a standard plate, and each purchase will send $15 to the Fairport Harbor Lights Foundation. The group is working to rehabilitate the lighthouses, both old and new. The original lighthouse is currently a museum at the site.
This is the third attempt to pass this lighthouse license plate bill. The second legislation (and the one this is based on) was proposed by state Sen. Tim Grendell, R-Chester Township, in September 2007. Prior to Grendell’s proposal, a similar measure had been introduced by former state Rep. Tim Cassell, D-Madison Village, but the bill did not pass. This one was amended into House Bill 273, which is referred to as the License Plates & Highways Bill. It allows for several special license plates, besides the lighthouse one, and is expected to pass, with the amendment, in the House of Representatives. Once this happens, it will be sent to the governor, Ted Strickland, for signing into law.
No word on the design, but Grendell stated it would be similar to other lighthouse plates. If all goes well, it should be available in the spring of 2009.
