Leaving West Quoddy Head Lighthouse in Lubec, Maine, on their bicycles, Caitlin Prentice and a couple of friends pedaled their two wheelers 4,377.5 miles across the United States, ending up the trip at Cape Meares Lighthouse near Tillamook on the Oregon Coast.
Riding through Michigan, which of course has plenty of lighthouses, the group stopped in Traverse City and picked up one more biker, Meryl Estes, who completed the trip with her long time friend. This unusual lighthouse trek involved 13 states, one Canadian province, 27 flat tires and 71 pounds of peanut butter, according to their notes.
Along the way they slept in a broken down school bus, showered in lawn sprinklers, pedaled through 100 degree heat and found strangers to both cook for them and allow them to camp in their backyards.”People in the middle of the country thought we were a bit nuts,” Prentice said. And they sent emails to their friends and family back home detailing their adventures.
They’ve turned those emails into a book, Biking the U.S. of Awesomeness, published by Graphic Union Press. The two are currently on a book promotion tour, so they may be coming to a bookstore near you in the future. Biking the U.S. of Awesomeness is available for $12.00 at Amazon.
