A Different NJ Lighthouse Challenge

Lighthouse Challenges are generally put on by lighthouse groups, often as a fundraiser. The goal is to visit as many of the lighthouses on the list and get a token at each, with those completing the “course” often getting a bigger gift. Well, there’s a new kind of lighthouse challenge going on in New Jersey right now. This challenge is called A Beacon of Hope…the 2008 New Jersey Lighthouse Climb for a Cause.
Now we’ve all heard of (and probably contributed to) walks or runs or rides for a charity, where someone collects pledges of money to be paid if they complete a course. But a young man in Mahwah, New Jersey, is taking it to a new level (pun intended) with him and a group of friends complete climbs of 11 of New Jersey’s lighthouses in order to earn money for LADACIN Network.
Jonathan Holmes, 23, has organized a group to climb the lighthouses over the course of four weekends to raise money and awareness of this agency. Besides collecting pledges for each step they climb, they’ve also sought event sponsorships. The LADACIN Network operates programs and services for more than 2,800 infants, children and adults with cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities and their families in Monmouth and Ocean counties.
Holmes began the series of climbs on Oct. 19 at the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse and the East Port Lighthouse. He continued on Oct. 26 at the Cape May Lighthouse, the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse, and the Absecon Lighthouse.
On Nov. 9, the group climbed the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, the Twin Lights of Navesink, and the Sea Girt Lighthouse.
The 2008 New Jersey Lighthouse Climb for a Cause will culminate with climbs at Tucker’s Island Light, Tuckerton, and Barnegat Lighthouse on Nov. 16.
I don’t even want to think about the number of steps in the 11 lighthouses, but I know if the group completes them all, they’ll have raised a hefty sum of money for their charity.
