The Gales of November

One of the most talented of lighthouse photographers, Gary Martin, has an animated collection of lighthouses in storms on his website. All of these were taken on Lake Michigan, most in November. Some of these animations have been featured on a special History Channel presentation entitled The Big Build - Lighthouse.
You really have to see them. They are all in .gif format, and are fairly large in size if you’re on a dial-up connection. But the wait to see them if you are is well worth it. These were not shot as video, these are individual photos shot with a regular camera to capture the waves breaking over the lighthouses. It truly takes a talented photographer to capture something like this with a camera. Video is easy, this is an art form.
Subscribers to Lighthouse Digest have seen Gary’s work on the cover, and if you read the Great Laker magazine, also there. He’s won numerous photography awards and has been featured on the cover of the 2005 Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival program. Gary’s full bio is here.
Lighthouses In a Storm leads to all of his animations, and be sure to explore the rest of his site.
