The Burmese Army, who man the Mayu (Oyster Island) Lighthouse, and guard Myanmar against smugglers, took two cattle traders hostage in what is apparently their own bribery extortion attempt on smugglers.
The cattle boat was stopped on its way to Bangladesh to sell the 70 head of cattle and were unable to pay the bribe demanded by the army. Two were taken hostage by the lighthouse keepers/army, taken to the lighthouse and the rest were told to go on to Bangladesh, sell their cattle and return with the money in exchange for their men.
According to the story on the Monthly Journal, another unidentified cattle trader said a group of cattle traders took a machine boat out to pay the ransom for their fellow traders to army officials. “I am sure the army officials will release them after receiving the five million kyat,” he said.
All I can say to this is, Wow. We’ve all heard of mooncussers, in fact their story always enthralled young visitors to Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, but these are (supposedly) modern times. I’m sad to see a lighthouse associated with something like this.
