Five Islands Lighthouse Will Shine On

Hello Stumbleupon Visitors. I believe this post was erroneously labeled with the tag for Cancer. I believe the post that you might like to see is this one: Lighthouse Fun Run For Breast Cancer. Thanks for checking it out.

Colchester County Agrees To Fund Move

Five Islands Lighthouse, Minas Basin, Nova ScotiaAfter a hard summer of fundraising which only brought in $5,000, the president of the Five Islands Lighthouse Preservation Society, Gloria Lewis, made an appeal for funding to the Colchester County (Nova Scotia) Council Committee. And they agreed to fund the move if no other monetary sources can be found. The land surrounding the lighthouse, the private Sand Point Beach Campground has been sold, and the access to the light is at risk.

The lighthouse will be moved to county-owned land nearby as soon as the ground hardens enough, probably later in the Fall. Colchester County agreed to ante up $10,000 to $15,000 to cover the remainder of the costs. The lighthouse, on the Bay of Fundy at Minas Basin, Nova Scotia, has previously been moved several times, due to its proximity to the highest tides in the world. These tides keep eating away at the land below the light. Colchester County purchased the light in 1996.

This is great news for this adorable pepper-pot style lighthouse, and guarantees its light will shine brightly on future generations who will now be guaranteed public access.
