We’ve seen a lighthouse installed in an airport, but now there is going to be one in a mall. An eighteen foot replica of Big Tub Lighthouse (Tobermory, ON) will be installed this week at Vaughn Mills Mall, Canada’s largest outlet mall, which is about 18 miles north of Toronto.Complete with a working light, the replica was built with the help of the Southampton Marine Heritage Society and Bruce County Tourism, who acquired the original lighthouse plans from Parks Canada. It took eight volunteers about 500 hours to build the replica. A delegation from Bruce County will be delivering the lighthouse (in pieces) to the mall this week.
The light will be reassembled in the Lakes District of the mall, where it will remain for at least the next ten years. Besides the working optic, it will have interactive display panels inside, along with an LCD television to tell the story about Bruce County lighthouses.
The cost to build this display? Only $10,000.
