Princess Anne, tenth in line to the British throne, and a patron of the Northern Lighthouse Board, is a self described “lighthouse lover” since the time she was five years old. Currently she’s on a tour, attempting to inspect all 209 of Scotland’s lighthouses. Of course, this is weather permitting, as access to some are on mere rock outcroppings in the North Atlantic.
The online newspapers have been filled with her tour, and in one of the latest talking about it, her work is praised by a Nationalist politician. Western Isles MP Angus MacNeil has put on the table a motion in the House of Commons highlighting her visits and hailing the work of the Northern Lighthouse Board.
IMacNeil proposes that the House “applauds the efforts of the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, in attempting to visit all Scotland’s 209 lighthouses spread over Scotland’s 10,000 kilometers of coastline and 790 islands. And further, applauds the work of the Northern Lighthouse Board, their ships and employees who work so hard to keep these magnificent feats of civil engineering in working order to maintain vital safety around Scotland’s coasts.”
Some of the better stories about the Princess and her tour include the following:
- Light fantastic: In an age of sat-navs our lighthouses are still a testament to the genius of British engineering
- Princess Anne Takes a Shine To Lighthouses
- Secret obsession that makes Princess Anne a champion pharologist
- The Lure of the Lighthouse
Gotta say we lighthouse lovers are in some pretty majestic company!
