Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse Availability

Saybrook Breakwater LighthousePerhaps the government will get it right this time. The Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse Notice of Availability has been sent out. Last year, it was on the list for disposal, or maybe not. There was some confusion about which of the two lighthouses at Saybrook, Connecticut were being offered to non-profits and local municipalities. Of course, the local municipality in this case wanted neither one, and even tried sending a delegation to Washington to tell the Coast Guard to keep it.

Well, this year there is at least one non-profit group interested in preserving this light that graces Connecticut’s license plates. An historic preservation organization called OakView Preservation Incorporated has stepped forward. According to Brad McCracken, CEO and founder of OVPI, they have submitted a letter of interest with the GSA and will complete the application for consideration to become the newest caretaker, guardian and owners of the Outer Light structure. “This structure is such a historical jewel that the Board of Directors of OVPI decide to expand so we can acquire and preserve this excellent piece of Americana, culture, heritage and history,” he stated. “When we heard that the town was hesitant, and that no one from the local community came forward, we thought we should at least give it a chance……the light needs to be preserved and history requires that someone take action. OVPI is just that someone!”

OakView Preservation Incorporated was formed in 2007 and exists in order to raise funds to acquire, preserve and open a public museum in the historic home in Norwood, Massachusetts, known as Oak View. They have also started raising funds to preserve the 1770 home of Col. Timothy Mann, a Revolutionary War service member, in Walpole, MA.

The group has started a Blog at ovpinews.blogspot.com/ to post updates.
