Scituate (Massachusetts) Historical Society is seeking applications from people interested in being keeper at Scituate Lighthouse. The present keeper has been at the lighthouse since 1986 and will be leaving later this fall.
Applications and other information are available at the Little Red Schoolhouse at 43 Cudworth Road in Scituate. The schoolhouse is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday and some Saturdays.
Let’s Talk Lighthouses has an excellent article on the two girls who pretended to be an army and saved the town of Scituate from the British during the Revolutionary War. That was one of my favorite stories to tell kids when they visited Pemaquid Point Lighthouse.
The Boston Globe has a story on the retiring Keeper, Ruth Downton. It’s worth a read as it details the duties and the requirements of a potential Keeper.
