Lighthouse Group To Operate Radio Station

Ludington, Michigan will apply for a license with the FCC to operate a 10 watt radio station, with the antenna to be placed on the city’s water treatment plant on Lake Michigan. The Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers  Association will operate the station, which will cover an area of land as far east as Memorial Medical Center as well as to boaters in Lake Michigan’s waters near Ludington. The lighthouse group will be broadcasting prerecorded messages notifying residents and visitors of special events in the area, historical information about the lighthouses and provide information about emergencies. They will not be allowed to run any advertising, or mention any specific business in the area.

“It’s a tool for us to use to provide information in town about our three attractions, so in that way it is beneficial indirectly,” said Kathy Painter, director of Big Sable Point Lighthouse.

Bob Sperling of the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association said Bill Baker, a member of the association, will donate all the equipment and with his company, Information Service Specialists (ISS), will operate the radio station.
