Turn Right At the Light? Or Left?

A recent article in the Times Online reported on a cruise ship that had run aground, stranding 662 passengers in the Baltic Sea. Cause of the accident was the navigator was unclear whether to go right around the (unnamed) lighthouse, or around to the left. He obviously chose the wrong direction, stranding the mostly elderly German passengers. All were evacuated from the stuck ship safely.
According to the article:
Stanislavs Cakss, an inspector at the Latvian marine administration, said the navigator of the German-operated ship, which was on a ten-day tour, “had to lead the vessel past a lighthouse, and he did it on the wrong side. It was just the human factor.”
Hmm, or maybe it was just a case of another fellow refusing to stop and ask directions. (Just kidding, guys! :))
