Lorain Lighthouse Unfurls New Flag

Lorain Lighthouse FlagThe Port of Lorain Foundation has designed a new flag to fly over the Lorain Lighthouse. The flag, pictured at right (click for slightly larger view), will be unfurled at a fundraising dinner to be held next month. The monies raised will initially go toward the building of a new docking facility at the lighthouse for visitors’ boats.

According to a story in the Morning Journal, the public will be able to buy the flag at the Foundation’s gift shop and other places yet to be determined. An explanation of the flag is below.

  • The swallowtail design is patterned upon and proudly imitates the unique ”Ohio Burgee,” the flag of the state of Ohio.
  • The blue semi-circle represents the blue sky over Lake Erie. It is outlined in gold, representing the light generated by our fourth order Fresnel lens which shines upon our roads and waterways represented by the red and white stripes.
  • The top red stripe represents the state of Ohio, the middle stripe represents the city of Lorain and the lower stripe represents the Lorain lighthouse, the famous ”Jewel of the Port.”
  • Lorain County is represented by the outline of the lighthouse official logo. The star shines above the lighthouse and locates its position on Lake Erie.
