Dead Tree Becomes Lighthouse

The Savannah River in Georgia has a new lighthouse, created out of a dead tree. Even though it’s not listed in the Light List, it’s certainly a working lighthouse. According to the story on WJBF.com, there hasn’t been a wreck since Bob Chaplin carved a lighthouse out of a dead tree he was preparing to remove. And if there is, “don’t blame Bob. After all, he’ll leave the light on for you.”

This started when Chaplin, a self-admitted “beach nut,” was preparing to remove a dead tree from his riverside home. As the tree was being delimbed, a “light came on” (pun intended) as he noticed its shape and thought, “Let’s make this a lighthouse.” So he did.

He and some friends took off the bark, used woodworking tools to notch the wood so it looked like brick, and painted the tree to look like Cape Hatteras, with black and white stripes. A light was acquired from a boat salvage yard in Miami, and voila, a lighthouse. Oh, and it’s a full thirty four feet tall, so you can’t miss it.
