The Port is currently awaiting word on a possible $322,000 grant from the city of Kennewick, which will go a long way toward the cost of the new lighthouse. Construction is set to start in 2009. Lighthouse Challenges are generally put on by lighthouse groups, often as a fundraiser. The goal is to visit as many of the lighthouses on the list and get a token at each, with those completing the “course” often getting a bigger gift. Well, there’s a new kind of lighthouse challenge going on in New Jersey right now. This challenge is called A Beacon of Hope…the 2008 New Jersey Lighthouse Climb for a Cause.Continued...
The sister group to the US Lighthouse Service was the US Life Saving Service. Often forgotten, and certainly not as well remembered as the lighthouse keepers, these brave men risked their lives to save shipwreck victims, while lighthouse keepers mostly just stood by. Merged into the Coast Guard in 1915, with the US Revenue Cutter Service, their story is less well known than the romantic tales of lighthouse keepers.

One of the most talented of lighthouse photographers, Gary Martin, has an animated collection of lighthouses in storms on his website. All of these were taken on Lake Michigan, most in November.
