St. Catherines’, ON, mayor Brian McMullan has come out in support of opening the Port Dalhousie Inner Range Light to the public on a daily basis. Currently, the Inner Light, owned by the town as a heritage building and not an active light, is open only one day to the public every year on Doors Open Historical Tour. McMullan asked the acting Parks and Recreation Director Jim Benson for a report on the feasibility of opening the lighthouse “from top to bottom for visitors.”
”What better way to see your city on a warm summer’s day than right from the top of that lighthouse?” said McMullan recently. “What a wonderful experience for residents and visitors alike.”
According to the story in the St. Catherines Standard, Director Benson had spoken with his staff about opening the light, but hadn’t budgeted any money for a consultant. The interior of the lighthouse may need some repairs, as most maintenance has been to the outside only. In fact, the lighthouse exterior has been wrapped in aluminum siding, covering the original wood, to stave off damage from rot.
The budget review committee asked Benson to report back on the cost of hiring a student for the summer and also to investigate possible government grants to help with the issues of accessibility and safety, as the monies would need to be added to the cultural budget otherwise.
