Sheffield Island Lighthouse Gets Grant

Norwalk Seaport Association Big Winner

Sheffield Island LighthouseSenator Bob Duff (D-Norwalk, CT) recently announced that the Norwalk Seaport Association would be the recipient of a $250,000 grant for improvements to the Sheffield Island Lighthouse. The funds will help cover the costs of a new dock, repairs to the bulkheads, a new pavilion, functioning restroom facilities, running water and electricity. These improvements will help increase public access to the lighthouse, originally built in 1868, but decommissioned after only 34 years of service. Currently the integral mid-Victorian serves as a museum and is surrounded by a wildlife sanctuary.

From a press release seen at the Norwalk Plus News:

“We are very excited about receiving this funding as it will allow us to increase public access and develop programming on Sheffield Island,” said Seaport Association Executive Director Susan Snider. “We are very grateful to Senator Bob Duff for working so hard on our behalf.”

A Haunted Past

Although this light served for such a short time in history, there are a couple of ghosts associated with the area, especially one of a little girl named Abby. It was investigated by the Connecticut Paranormal Research and Investigations, and the full stories of their investigations are located at their site: Is the Lighthouse Haunted? and Ghost Hunters Claim Lighthouse Is Home to Troubles Spirits. Fascinating reading, even if you don’t believe in ghosts or spirits. Lighthouse News was privileged to take part in a paranormal investigation late last year at Portsmouth Lighthouse, and though no definitive conclusions were found, it was nonetheless a fascinating experience.

More information about Sheffield Island Lighthouse and nature trail can be found at the Norwalk Seaport Association website.
