Lighthouse Keeper’s Home On The Market

Vandalism Forces Sale

The Keeper’s House at Swallowtail Lighthouse, Grand Manan IslandThe village of Grand Manan on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, has put the 1858 Swallowtail Lighthouse Keeper’s home on the market, according to a story at CBC News Canada. Used as a six room Bed and Breakfast, the home has been owned by the village since the lighthouse was automated in 1986. Swallowtail Lighthouse, on the north head of the island in the Bay of Fundy, was in the news a year ago when it was almost consumed by fire, along with the inn, except for the quick thinking of the volunteer firefighters.

Unfortunately, after numerous incidents of vandalism, the town has decided the upkeep of the Keeper’s House is too costly to maintain. According to the mayor, Dennis Greene, repairs to the keeper’s building and surrounding property have cost the village more than $80,000 dollars in recent years.

“It’s been vandalized quite a bit,” Greene told CBC News. “You can make trips out there once every week and repair the damages that have been done.”

One of the terms of the sale include the requirement that public access to the lighthouse, shown below, be maintained by the new owner. The village has put out a call for proposals, but has not received anything satisfactory at this time. It’s also not yet formally listed on any site, but the story indicated the village was approached by a potential buyer from South Carolina.

Swallowtail Lighthouse

Although there is no official sales listing, anyone interested in becoming a modern day lighthouse keeper could seriously consider investing in this, either as a private home or to reopen it as a bed and breakfast. Swallowtail Light is said to be the most photographed of the several lighthouses on Grand Manan island. And what a breathtaking view from the home, with whales and dolphins swimming outside the door.
