Lighthouses As Spy Detectors?

Radars are to be installed on nine lighthouses on the east and west coasts of India, according to a news note at New India Press. The Director-General of Lighthouses, M.M.S. Suman, indicated the radars would help to solve traffic problems from increased cargo vessels at the ports.

India is one of the few countries still actively building lighthouses, with one under construction at Prayagi in Ganjam district, and two soon to be built lightstations at Devi Point and Dhamara. All necessary environmental and forestry department clearances are in place. Special care has been taken to not interfere with the Olive Ridley sea turtles near Prayagi.

Addressing the issue of erosion at Gopalpur Lighthouse (one of those included in the radar installations), Suman said his department has started efforts to control the problem at both coasts.
