Yaquina Head: A retrospective

A lovely story appeared in the Newport News Times recently, by Terry Thompson. It’s well worth the read. Here’s an excerpt:

It was a beautiful spring day when I drove out to Yaquina Head to witness the rededication of the lighthouse. There was a slight breeze (slight to me, anyway, but I’ve spent 40 years on the ocean) and the sun was shining. The scaffolding that had surrounded the tower had come down, and the result of months of restoration work was there for everyone to see. The metalwork and brick looked like new. The tower was covered with a coat of gleaming white paint. The moss on the north side of the tower, which had been there at least since I was a kid, was gone….But that afternoon, my memories stretched back even further, to a meeting more than 40 years ago that helped set all these changes at Yaquina Head in motion. Most people don’t know that meeting ever took place. But I do, because I was there.
