Ladies of the Lights

If you live in the Great Lakes area you might want to check out the upcoming exhibit at the Michigan Women’s Historical Center and Hall of Fame. Michigan’s female lighthouse keepers Ladies of the Lights: Michigan Women in the U.S. Lighthouse Service will be on display Jan. 14 to June 27.
Visitors can learn about the first female lighthouse keeper in Michigan (Catherine Shook at Pointe Aux Barques), the longest-serving keeper (Elizabeth Williams at Beaver Island Harbor and Little Traverse) and Anastasia Truckey, who took over lighthouse-keeping duties at Marquette Harbor when her husband went off to the Civil War.
The exhibit will audio and video elements and hands-on experiences for children, including a build-your-own-lighthouse station. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. It’s at 213 W. Main St. in Lansing, Michigan.
