Clare Island Lighthouse: A Steal at $2,162,630

History
The original lighthouse was built in 1806 by the Marquis of Sligo. A second tower was built in 1818, along with the keeper’s quarters. The lights served faithfully until 1965 when they were extinguished. For the next thirty years, the waves, the weather and neglect battered the site, until it was sold to a cople who completely restored and renovated it for a country inn. In 2001 it was sold again, and became a private residence. It’s now on the market again, listed at Luxury Portfolio.

Weather plays an important part while living at the lighthouse and where better to enjoy the sun but in the privacy of the grounds with the most magnificent views imaginable. Or be the first to see a storm coming towards the mainland, and watch the changes of the water and sky from the safety and warmth of the lighthouse. For those who enjoy a thrill, watching the stormy weather from the lighthouse tower can certainly guarantee that, and for an extra experience during very rough weather the waves crashing from the cliffs below have been known to rise so high that they actually spray above the tower.

Can you imagine the size of the piggy bank needed for that one? Or even more so, the hammer needed to bust into it? It’s a beautiful home on a beautiful site, though.
