Clare Island Lighthouse: A Steal at $2,162,630
Tired of waiting for the GSA to resume bidding on Point No Point Lighthouse? Forget it…that one needs too much work anyway. Haul out your checkbooks and grab one that’s been completely restored, renovated and modernized. Even better, it’s on an island on the Emerald Isle. And for a cool two million, this six bedroom, six bath luxury home can be yours. Clare Island is located in Clew Bay, off Westport, in the West of Ireland. It is known as the green pearl of the west coast and is the largest of the 365 islands in Clew Bay. It is 3.5 miles from the mainland and accessible by ferry.
History
The original lighthouse was built in 1806 by the Marquis of Sligo. A second tower was built in 1818, along with the keeper’s quarters. The lights served faithfully until 1965 when they were extinguished. For the next thirty years, the waves, the weather and neglect battered the site, until it was sold to a cople who completely restored and renovated it for a country inn. In 2001 it was sold again, and became a private residence. It’s now on the market again, listed at Luxury Portfolio.
Property Description
From the site, the lighthouse is described:
Clare Island Lighthouse is a truly unique property, situated off the west coast of Ireland perched on top of a cliff with panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean, Achill Island and back towards the rolling landscape of Clare Island. The property itself consists of the main residence, two lighthouse towers including further bedroom suites and various outbuildings, all of which have potential to convert to further accommodation.
The main residence has been renovated and refurbished to a very high standard, including new wood framed double glazed windows throughout, a new roof, a new heating systems and other modern amenities. It is now a very comfortable home in the most special building and location.
Weather plays an important part while living at the lighthouse and where better to enjoy the sun but in the privacy of the grounds with the most magnificent views imaginable. Or be the first to see a storm coming towards the mainland, and watch the changes of the water and sky from the safety and warmth of the lighthouse. For those who enjoy a thrill, watching the stormy weather from the lighthouse tower can certainly guarantee that, and for an extra experience during very rough weather the waves crashing from the cliffs below have been known to rise so high that they actually spray above the tower.
A detailed description of each room is on the website, along with a photo gallery of some of the interior and exterior. Ah well, we can all dream, can’t we?

Can you imagine the size of the piggy bank needed for that one? Or even more so, the hammer needed to bust into it? It’s a beautiful home on a beautiful site, though.
