Penfield Reef Decision In Sight

The Fairfield Minuteman has posted an update on the town of Fairfield’s application to become the owner of the Penfield Reef Lighthouse. According to the story, The Penfield Reef Lighthouse Committee, which is responsible for applying for the lighthouse and working out maintenance issues, asked for a second resolution to be passed and added to the original ten page application. The Board of Selectmen complied and passed the necessary resolution on December 5.
The Board of Selectmen originally voted to pursue ownership of this historic lighthouse six months ago, and this was the first of many lighthouses that PETA suddenly took an interest in acquiring for their Fish Empathy Project. Fortunately for lighthouse lovers and fishermen everywhere, PETA seems to have lost interest in using a lighthouse as a faux fish cafe while displaying a quilt that proves that fish have feelings too. They withdrew their application a few months ago, after sending a letter to the town asking that their ownership not harm fish in any way. The town declined to respond to that bit of minor extortion.
Ken Flatto, First Selectman of Fairfield, stated in the story that “We think we are the most favored applicant - the top choice, but will not know until the final application is reviewed.” The story notes there are five applicants for the lighthouse but doesn’t list them. A final decision by the GSA is expected sometime in the spring of 2008.
