A Lighthouse For Sleepovers?

Esopus Meadows Lighthouse, New York - Creative Commons photo by cwbash on FlickrA faith-based youth organization in New York City, Shiloh For New York City Children has requested the use of the Esopus Meadows Lighthouse for sleepovers for their youths at risk. The plan would be for six to ten children at a time, with one adult for each youth, to spend three days and two nights at the lighthouse several times over the summer.

The group presented its request to the Esopus Town Board meeting on December 3, and was requested to have the proposal submitted in writing. Organizer Ted Del Gadio told the board access would be by canoe or kayak, and the youths could help in ongoing restoration efforts. He told the board he’d like to start the program in a year or two, but that he didn’t know how long it would take because “there’s a lot of work involved.”

“They get nurtured in this camp program and through these retreats,” Del Gadio said of the youth group members. “They learn that if they educate themselves, if they treat themselves with respect, treat others with respect, there’s hope for the future.”

According to Shiloh’s website, their mission is a “not-for-profit Christian organization dedicated to equipping at-risk youth with tools to build hope. We teach, mentor, and befriend them to promote their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual growth.”
