From Newsday, comes the encouraging story that the Nantucket Lightship may find a permanent home in Oyster Bay, Nantucket, where it has been docked temporarily for five years. The National Lighthouse Museum, which has had problems getting off the ground, is willing to give the 71 year old vessel to the town, so it can finally be restored. Volunteers have been hard to find as the lightship didn’t belong to the town.
The town is currently investigating forming a non profit corporation to be able to accept the lightship, which is stipulated in the deed. The ship will remain at the Waterfron Center in Oyster Bay, and perhaps become a maritime educational museum. One little snag in this plan, though. The town residents have asked for transient dockage at the Waterfront Center, which does not currently exist. In which case, according to Jamie Deming, vice president of the Waterfront Center, the town should put it to a vote.
Let’s hope the residents, if it does go to a vote, do the right thing and realize what a treasure they’ll have, along with a tourist draw, if they accept the National Lighthouse Museum’s offer.
