Lighthouse Coverage Wins Award
No, not for me, unfortunately. But I’m not a mainstream (yet) publisher of a newspaper. However, one newspaper did win awards for its coverage of the moving of Sankaty Lighthouse (Sankaty, Mass.) this past year. And from no less a prestigious entity as the New England Press Association.

Ship Mows Down Danish Lighthouse
The Danish police are holding the Georgia-flagged coaster Yamburg, moored in Hanstholm on the Danish west coast. The captain is charged with colliding with one of the lighthouses in the entrance to Limfjord on Hals Barre. And it’s totally gone.

New Zealand Lake to Lighthouse Race
Wow. New Zealand’s first Lake to Lighthouse Race is quite the challenge. Taking place this weekend (November 20-23), the 196 km race from Lake Waikaremoana to Wairoa is harder than any triathlon. And it was won by a New Zealand husband and wife team who signed up sight unseen (for the course).

A Different NJ Lighthouse Challenge
Lighthouse Challenges are generally put on by lighthouse groups, often as a fundraiser. The goal is to visit as many of the lighthouses on the list and get a token at each, with those completing the “course” often getting a bigger gift. Well, there’s a new kind of lighthouse challenge going on in New Jersey right now. This challenge is called A Beacon of Hope…the 2008 New Jersey Lighthouse Climb for a Cause.

Remember the Surfmen
The sister group to the US Lighthouse Service was the US Life Saving Service. Often forgotten, and certainly not as well remembered as the lighthouse keepers, these brave men risked their lives to save shipwreck victims, while lighthouse keepers mostly just stood by. Merged into the Coast Guard in 1915, with the US Revenue Cutter Service, their story is less well known than the romantic tales of lighthouse keepers.

The Gales of November
One of the most talented of lighthouse photographers, Gary Martin, has an animated collection of lighthouses in storms on his website. All of these were taken on Lake Michigan, most in November. Some of these animations have been featured on a special History Channel presentation entitled The Big Build - Lighthouse.
