Lighthouse Bidding War Starts

Point No Point Lighthouse Creative Commons Photo by Zoopmon on FlickrAt least one familiar bidder is participating in the online government auction for Point No Point Lighthouse near Dameron, MD. OldSalt2 started the bidding, and has placed two bids so far. However, a new player has the current top bid of $25,000. How far will this go? Only time will tell, as there is currently no closing date set yet. The last MD offshore lighthouse went for $200,000, while Lubec Channel Light in Maine went for a paltry $46,000. With the amount of work needed to restore these offshore lights, Gary Zaremba, successful bidder for Lubec, got the best deal.

For the money, whoever ends up with the winning bid for Point No Point, will receive:

  1. A lighthouse only, no land included with the deal
  2. An inability to buy flood insurance
  3. The necessity of dealing with state and federal historic registries and the problem of finding historically correct replacements
  4. No public utilities
  5. A privy hanging over the side that you can’t even use
  6. The unannounced boarding of your home by the Coast Guard to maintain their light, foghorn and other equipment
  7. The possibility of being stranded for days due to bad weather
  8. Must be in good physical shape to climb into your new home, and keep the ladder in good repair for the Coast Guard to enter at any time
  9. Rent your own barge and winch to get your furniture delivered
  10. A foghorn to disturb your conversations, not to mention your sleep

On the other hand, you do get a unique summer getaway, with only the local fishermen and seagulls for company.

As of 5:40 pm EDT, the price someone is willing to pay has jumped up to $80,000 with a flurry of bids coming in this afternoon. Three people are duking it out, with jcarbone, peterpry and rkrljt outbidding each other every few minutes. Currently, rkrljt holds the top spot. To get in on this auction and maybe own your own piece of history, get your $10,000 earnest money and head over to place your bid
before it’s too late.
