Sankaty Has Made It

At about 11:00 a.m. EDT on October 9, Sconset Trust President Bob Felch gave the final three inch push to line up Sankaty lighthouse with the new foundation, 405 feet away from the old. The lighthouse is about six feet above her final resting place and now crews are preparing the new three foot thick two feet tall sub-foundation that will meld the old with the new. It will take about a week after the forms are made and the concrete poured for it to set, and another two to three weeks before setting the weight of the 500 ton lighthouse onto the pad. A relighting ceremony is planned for the end of the month, pending coordination with the Coast Guard.
