Another Maryland Lighthouse For Sale

Point No Point Lighthouse Creative Commons Photo by Zoopmon on FlickrIn keeping with the recent rash of government lighthouse sales, Point No Point Lighthouse in Maryland has gone on the auction block. Another offshore light, this one was established in 1905 at the entrance to the Potomac River on the Chesapeake Bay. It’s an octagonal building, two and a half stories of brick on a cast iron and concrete caisson. It is still an active aid to navigation, so whoever buys this one will have a solar powered porch light.

As before, the opening bid is $10,000 and a site inspection will be taking place this month. Michael Gabriel, the recent purchaser of Fourteen Foot Bank Lighthouse and owner of Bloody Point Lighthouse, is planning to attend. He’s not interested in that lighthouse so much, as he is wanting to get ideas for restoration of Fourteen Foot Bank. Although looking at the photos of the interior of this one, taken in October of 2002, I’m not really sure if he’ll get any tips and tricks on restoration. He did state he is interested in purchasing another lighthouse that is soon to go up for sale, the Sharp’s Island Lighthouse near St. Michael’s, MD. If you click on that link to Sharp’s, brace yourself for what will certainly be a challenge to beat the recent Maryland Lighthouse Challenge.

If you’re interested in seeing the interior photos, the Point No Point Invitation For Bids is available here. It’s a .PDF file and is set to open in a new window. PDF File Will open in new windowPoint No Point IFB

And a little caveat: I certainly hope this is the Point No Point Lighthouse that’s actually for sale. There is another on the other side of the country with the identical name, but in the state of Washington. With the recent mix-up on the Saybrook Lighthouse being the wrong one listed, and another more minor mistake caught by a vigilant reader of Seacoast Online regarding Whaleback Ledge Lighthouse (see the comments), one really should check to be sure the government has listed the correct light station.
