Auction Watch: Lubec Channel Lighthouse

Just when we thought there’d only be one bid for the forlorn Lubec Channel Lighthouse, a small bidding war has started. A soft close has been set for Monday, September 24, at 3:00 p.m. EDT and there are currently three bids posted for this historic sparkplug lighthouse, which is about as far east as you can get in the United States. Highest bid is $21,000, proffered by someone identifying him/herself as “kingtown.” Perhaps someone from Bangor? There’s still time to get in on the action, if you have the minimum deposit (earnest money) of $5,000.

What do you get for your cash? Well, there is 628 square feet of living space on two levels, a foghorn (keeping in mind this area of the country is shrouded in fog almost every day), but oh what a view. Surrounded on all sides by water, one way looks toward Lubec, Maine, a sleepy fishing village in economically depressed Washington County, and the other looks to Campobello Island, Nova Scotia, CAN. Sitting on the first level observation deck, the new owner will be able to watch the whales playing almost right below. The light is a ten minute boat ride from Lubec, less than two miles from the shore.

So what do you think? If you want to get in on the action, I mean auction, get your bids in now. It’ll be one heck of a deal for someone if they get it for $21,000. This is the site of America’s First Light (as in the dawn) and you won’t find waterfront land in Maine for this price anywhere else. Once again, I wish I had the money to save every one of these beacons. But at least PETA isn’t in the bidding for this.
