Another Lighthouse On the Market…In Scotland

View from the Sunroom at West LightsLooks like Strutt and Parker have become the premier broker for lighthouse properties in the UK. Besides the Belle Toute Lighthouse, they’ve now added another to their offerings. This time, it’s the West Lights, Tayport Fife, Scotland. But, minimum bids for this one are £475,000, or $953,040.20 USD. Not a bad price, considering you get an awesome view of the River Tay from the sunroom (pictured at left).

This was originally two cottages, but thirty years ago they were merged into one unit. About three years ago, a David Nicholls, a retired brigadier, began renovating it into the charming home it is today. Unfortunately, he passed away before it was completed, and his heirs are selling the home. And what a home it is. From the website listing of its features:

The High Lighthouse is a charming stone house under a slate roof which has recently been refurbished and extended to capture the Tay estuary views. The property was originally two lighthouse keeper’s cottages built in the 1820’s and are believed to have been designed, along with the lighthouse, by the famous Scottish lighthouse engineer, Robert Stevenson. The cottages were amalgamated about 30 years ago to create one house, and the current owners have totally renovated and extended the property over the last 3 years. The house has been refurbished to a high level of finishing including oak floors through part of the house, a wood burning stove in the drawing room and Neff kitchen appliances, whilst retaining many original features including several fireplaces and internal doors. There are two floored attics accessed by Ramsay ladders, providing useful storage space.

Now, as if that isn’t enough, the landscaping is described thusly:

There is a large garden to the south of the house which has been immaculately landscaped and is designed to be easily maintained. It is predominately lawn with mature trees such as copper beach and a prolific apple tree. A wall runs the length of the boundary with three paved paths leading down to the house.
To the north of the house, there is a private secluded garden with a patio area. A stone pathway leads down to a sandy cove suitable for landing small boats. There are two garden sheds, one constructed with brick and one with timber.

View of the Wests lighthouse and attached dwellingOkay, so the lighthouse, which is attached to the house, isn’t included in the deal, but the new owner is allowed to access the light, to climb to the gallery for the wonderful views. And if the Port of Dundee Limited, who operates the light, decides it will be excessed, it is to be offered to the homeowner at the bargain price of £1,000 plus the Retail Price Index from December 2003, whatever that may be. The Port of Dundee Limited rarely visits the light anyway, just to maintain the batteries for the small navigational beam.
Anyway, if you lost out on the bidding for Fourteen Foot Bank Lighthouse, this may be just the right the opportunity. And of course, this place has a fully functioning bathroom. If you’d like to see the full description of the property, with pictures, PDF File Will open in new windowStrutt and Parker Document for West Light will have you drooling. It did me. Oh, and if you’re a golfer, this place isn’t far from St. Andrew’s, which is home to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.
