Point Cartwright Light Going Pink in October

Point Cartwright Lighthouse on the Mooloobaba River, Queensland, AustraliaPoint Cartwright Lighthouse, in Queensland Australia, will join other buildings such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Kensington Palace, the Empire State Building and more when the concrete tower is bathed in pink lights beginning September 26, 2007. The lighthouse, a reinforced modern (1978) tower, will join in Estee Lauder’s Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s annual Global Illumination Initiative to raise funds for breast cancer research and promote awareness of this killer.

Breast cancer kills about 46,000 women and men annually, and the BCRF was created in 1992 to fight this grim disease. Rather than just pink ribbons, in 2000 the company devised the Global Illumination Initiative to raise awareness. The complete list of 2006 participants is here along with photos showing the illumination. This will be the first time a lighthouse, already known as a Beacon of Hope, or a Guiding Light (corporate sponsor categories) will participate.

Point Cartwright was built in 1978 of reinforced concrete with a precast concrete lantern room to replace a previous light that was being overshadowed by nearby high rise construction. The previous light was erected in 1967, next to the original lighthouse established in 1896. The light has never been manned.

Perhaps next year more of our Shining Stars worldwide will participate, but for this year, congratulations to Point Cartwright for leading the way.
